Who does what
How the DMV works in New Jersey
In New Jersey, the Motor Vehicle Commission runs Licensing Centers for licenses, permits and tests, Vehicle Centers for titles and registrations, and road test sites. Nearly every in-person visit needs an appointment, booked on MVC's own site, and most renewals are online. Cars get an emissions check every 2 years. Here's how it works.

Permits, tests, licenses, REAL ID
By appointment for permits, knowledge tests, REAL ID, transfers and in-person renewals. Walk in for permit validation, decals, name changes and placards. Open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

By appointment. Some share a building with a Licensing Center; seven also issue REAL ID. Registration renewals are usually online.

- New residents: 60 days
- Transfer your license and your car within 60 days, or before your old license expires if that's sooner.
- Renew online, 4 years
- Most people renew online, and it's done the same day. $24, or $35 for REAL ID.
- GDL for new drivers
- Permit at 16 (driving school) or 17, 6 months of practice and 50 hours, then a probationary license for a year.
- No phones for new drivers
- Permit and probationary drivers can't use any phone, even hands-free. Red decals on both plates until 21.
- Inspection every 2 years
- An emissions check at a state station or private facility. New cars get 5 years.
- Address changes: 1 week
- Tell MVC within a week of moving. It's online only.
