New Jersey DMV fees

The Motor Vehicle Commission sets these fees. There are no county or agent add-ons. Online payments go through a processor that adds its own service fee. Sales tax goes to the NJ Division of Taxation.

Driver license and ID

Driver license, 4 yearsStandard renewal, or transfer from another state. New drivers pay $6 for the probationary license, then usually $19.50 ($29 REAL ID) to upgrade after a year.: $24

Over 3,500 lbs, last 2 model years: $84 a year
Senior (65+) or disability discountPassenger vehicles you own or lease: $7 less
Electric car (ZEV) feeFrom July 1, 2026; $250 in 2024, up $10 each year: $270 a year
Motorcycle: $65 a year
Duplicate registration$11 in the first 3 years of a new car's 4-year registration: $5

MVC publishes no late fee for renewing a registration after it expires; a registration expired more than 6 months is renewed by appointment.
New cars get a 4-year registration, paid up front; MVC's calculator gives the amount.
The Division of Taxation may compare the price you report with the car's book value.
