Who does what
How the DMV works in Georgia
In Georgia, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) runs Customer Service Centers for licenses, permits, IDs and tests. Walk in for everything except road tests. Car titles, tags and registration are handled by your county's tag office for the Department of Revenue, and many renewals of both can be done online or at a grocery store kiosk. Here's how it works.

Licenses, permits, IDs and tests
Run by the state. Walk in, except for road tests, which are by appointment. Most are open Tuesday to Friday, and some Saturday mornings. Fill in the online form before you go.

Run by each county's tax commissioner for the Department of Revenue. You use the office in the county where you live. Kiosks in Kroger and Publix stores renew both licenses and registrations.

- Get a Georgia license, then register your car, within 30 days of moving.
- $32 for up to 8 years
- Renew up to 150 days early, online for $5 less if your card has the star.
- Teens: 1 year and 1 day
- A permit from 15, held 1 year and 1 day, plus Joshua's Law driver ed and ADAP, before a Class D at 16.
- Class D curfew
- No driving from midnight to 5 a.m., no exceptions, and limits on passengers in the first year.
- Emissions in 13 counties
- For 2026, metro Atlanta gas cars and light trucks from 2002 to 2023 need a yearly test, up to $25, before renewal.
