In New York one agency, the DMV, handles both driver licenses and car registration. Offices in NYC and its suburbs are run by the state; in most other counties the county clerk runs them. Here's how it works.
State-run DMV offices
NYC, Long Island and nearby
Run by NY DMV in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Albany and Onondaga counties. Reservations strongly encouraged.

- New residents: 30 days
- Exchange your license and register your car within 30 days of moving to New York.
