Who does what
How the DMV works in Florida
In Florida there's no state DMV office network to speak of: FLHSMV sets the rules, and the 67 county tax collectors run the offices, most of which do driver licenses and tags under one roof. Each county sets its own hours and booking. Many renewals, replacements and registrations can be done online on MyDMV Portal. Here's how it works.
County tax collectors
Licenses, IDs, tests, tags and titles
Most service centers do both driver licenses and vehicles. Hours and appointments are set by each county, and they add a $6.25 service fee to license transactions.

Tags and titles only
In Miami-Dade, Broward and a few other counties, private license plate agents handle registrations and titles. They may charge fees on top of the state's, and must list them.

- Online every other time
- Renew online on MyDMV Portal every other time, if your card has the star. $48 for 8 years.
- $6.25 at the tax collector
- Tax collector offices add a $6.25 service fee to license visits. Veterans with proof don't pay it.
- Teens: 12 months, 50 hours
- A 6-hour DETS course, then a learner's license from 15, held 12 months with 50 logged hours before the driving test.
- No car inspections
- Florida doesn't inspect cars, but a used car coming from another state needs a VIN check.
- Address changes: 30 days
- Update your license and registration within 30 days of moving. Usually online.
