Renewing registration
Online you need only the registration card or renewal notice. At a DMV center or DMV Select, bring these.

Your registration card or renewal notice
DMV mails reminders 90 days ahead and emails or texts them 30 days ahead.
Insurance
Insurance of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per crash for injuries and $25,000 for property damage (50/100/25). You certify it on the application; insurers report to DMV.
A passing emissions test, if the car is kept in Northern Virginia
Only if it applies
Stations send it to DMV electronically; you don't carry paper.
Payment
$30.75 a year for a car of 4,000 lbs or less, $35.75 for 4,001 to 6,500 lbs. Northern Virginia adds $2 a year for the emissions program, cars rated 25 MPG or more pay a highway use fee ($135.63 a year for an electric car), and some cities and counties add their own fee. A $10 late fee if it expired.
