Book with a driver training school or testing location, or one of the few DOL offices that test. You need 80 out of 100.

Your learner permit
Held at least 6 months if you're 16 or 17, with driver training done.
A car with valid registration, tabs and plates
Brake lights, signals, belts, mirrors, wipers and defroster must work. Rentals are fine.
Proof of insurance for that car
Showing the policy holder, the car and the policy dates. No test without the car papers and insurance.
16 or 17: a parent's sign-off on 50 practice hours
Only if it applies
40 in daylight and 10 at night, with a driver licensed at least 3 years.
Under 25 from November 1, 2026: the work zone course
Only if it applies
DOL's free online course, about an hour, before your license is issued.
