Getting a learner permit
Fill in the application online first. Bring originals, not copies.

Your online application confirmation
From the driver license application on dmv.ca.gov. It's valid for 12 months.
Proof of identity
A US passport, US birth certificate or Permanent Resident Card, for example.
Your Social Security number
Needed for most applicants; California DMV lists a few exceptions.
2 proofs of California residency
2 different printed documents with your name and the same mailing address, like a utility bill, bank statement, lease or insurance document.
Driver education certificate and a parent, if you're under 18
Only if it applies
Completion or enrollment. Your parent or guardian signs the application through their own MyDMV account and comes with you.
Payment, $46
It covers the permit and your first license.
Glasses or contacts, if you wear them
Only if it applies
For the vision exam. Arrive before 4:30 p.m.; no tests after that.
